George Russell took 3rd overall in the FIA European Formula 3 Championship after a series of valiant comeback drives through the field at Hockenheim after an engine penalty meant he would start at the back in all three races.

Hockenheim played host to the final round of the FIA Formula 3 European Championship, with Russell in contention to finish 2nd if results went his way. However Russell's weekend hopes were dented by an engine change, meaning he would receive a ten place grid penalty for all three races this weekend. Nevertheless, Russell used this opportunity to showcase his skills in coming through the pack.

Race one saw Russell start 19th, a great start vaulted him up the order and he continued to pick up positions with various overtakes. Russell finished 7th at the flag in round 28.

The second race was a repeat of the first, going from 16th on the grid this time, Russell again came through the pack well. Gaining a total of ten positions, aswell as the fastest lap in the 33 minute race, coming home in 6th position - securing more points to strengthen 3rd overall in the standings.

Russell gained a pair of positions in the final race to move up from his 15th place starting berth. He continued to gain ground in the early stages, moving up to 9th position by the fourth lap. However he was forced into the pits at the end of the sixth lap with a mechanical issues, ending his charge.

Despite the non-finish, Russell had enough points in the bag to secure 3rd overall in the championship. He was presented with his prize on the podium later in the day, before attending the prize ceremony to recognise his achievement.

George Russell “After a lot of bad luck throughout the season, it hasn't been easy. But I'm happy with what we achieved as a team! Taking 3rd overall in the FIA F3 European Championship is a great achievement for me, also for Hitech GP in taking 2nd overall in the team's championship."

Russell took two victories and ten podiums finishes, but was thwarted by numerous mechanical gremlins which blunted his challenge for overall honours.
